Dealing with difficult bosses is a reality that you cannot avoid experiencing in your professional life. The label "difficult boss" is actually general. It could mean that the boss is strict with deadlines, or it could also mean that he or she is really a rude person who verbally abuses his or her subordinates. Here are some tips on dealing with a difficult boss:
Don’t absent-mindedly react to verbal abuse.
Mentally count from one to ten before saying anything. This will help you calm your emotions and help you answer calmly. Never respond emotionally as it will just escalate into a fight. As you are the subordinate, this is a fight you will certainly lose.
Discuss the problem rather than confront the boss
By making the criticism a problem solving opportunity instead of looking at it as a personal attack, you have shown your boss and probably his bosses the level of professionalism you are capable of.
The bottom line is, be objective and professional no matter what. At the end of the day you still have to do the job that you are being paid to do even if you don't like your boss.

An evil boss, a nagging wife, and a brat? Your world will surely spin out of control. What's a poor guy got to do? Step into the shower and sing your lungs out! Nobody has to hear about your nerve-racking notes while you keep your sanity intact in the shower. We all share the same ordeal, but if you respond to stress wittingly, you don't have to lose your mind, your family, and precious job choice. You're a damn prick if you decide to hoist the white flag and surrender to pressure.
When we're all pumped up, we need to let go and unwind. Search for meaningful outlets where we can express the blowing mess in our heads and ease out the emotional stress. Pop in a CD or use a mic. You can even do a capella just to suit your heart's desire. Not only do you give your voice some singing practice -- you also ooze out the tension from your body. Music can make you forget about your worries. Before you know it, you're already rapping like P. Diddy or ripping your lungs out like Josh Groban.
The most effective way to start your day is to drown your troubles away in the shower. The noise, the warm water -- ah, you'll find comfort in all these. I, too, often find myself in distress but when music keeps playing, I enjoy even the awkward moments of serenity. We're all boggled with the relentless demands, but I play with my time. Even if you think about the problem all day long, you'll end up with same dilemma. So, go ahead and indulge yourself in some singing. Answers and solutions will pop up, eventually.

There are two root words for pressure -- press and sure. Under tremendous pressure at work, you'll be pressed to keep things rolling and turning while being badgered by numerous challenges and demands. However, you're also sure to blow your top and beat your brains out! Like fuming kettle out of its boiling water, you may just want to scream and evaporate from these nerve-racking moments. The horrible nightmare is, there's no escaping pressure. This is an inevitable fact of life and we all just need to live with it and learn to use it at our disposal and advantage.

It's distressing to see people lose themselves with too much pressure. They're like cookies starting to crumble from a tight grip. Although you may want to come to their rescue, you can do nothing but stare so long as they don't help themselves. So always try to strike a balance in life. Prioritize, organize, and share the burden. You're not invincible like superheroes and even Superman has his weaknesses. Delegate work if needed and identify the pressure points. I'm sure there are countless areas, but try to deal with them one at a time. Devote time and energy or, might as well, pour it into writing. Don't be too hard on yourself because worrying may disrupt work and defeat your appetite for life!

Life really sucks! That's all you need to know. Yes, we are a constant target for pressure and we can do nothing about it. But if we only explore our wit and psyche, then may be there's a chink of hope somewhere. With too much energy and vim, all we need is too look for our hollowed spot and fill it in with the excess baggage of pressure. Meet new people, indulge in recreational activities, and keep your body healthy. A vigorous lifestyle breaks the chain from suffocating pressure and stress. At the end of every grueling day, compliment yourself with the good things you've done. Stop looking grimly ahead. Take one step at a time and before you know it, you've gone past the bottleneck of your stressful life.

Have you ever figured why you always have to miss the most important meeting or have to be an hour late on a Monday when there's more work piling up on your desk? It's not just the manic Monday that's getting to your nerves but the whole traffic jam stresses you badly even before you get to see the real office mess. But hey, you may flare up but the road won't certainly clear out and unclog its way. You are left with no other choice but to stick with it anyway!
Monday, April 30. 2007
You're tooting your horns wildly and you're just about to blow your top. Just look around you, all drivers and passengers are knitting into a frown. They're having the same bad day as you do. Bumper to bumper, you can't pull a Superman stunt and fly out of it. It's manic and I know exactly how you feel. Either you're cursing every damn minute or simply praying, calling all the saints so they can hear you out hoping for a miracle. Even if you're too desperate, there's no escape out. That's awfully distressing! Traffic jam is a curse of modern urban living and the city life. Just play it cool, and any minute you may move inch by inch to your destined place to be.
Sunday, April 29. 2007
Traffic jam is not an excuse to feel sorry for yourself. I hear this all the time, "God give me the courage to accept the things I can't change." Now, that's a real prayer. Instead of moping and whining, you can at least enjoy the time and the ride. You're stuck, but it doesn't mean you won't move on. Do yourself a favor, play some music on your radio to soothe your soul and calm your nerves. Turn your thoughts into something else, like have you given your wife the love that she deserves? Are you able to supervise the needs of your kids? There are plenty of things to think about. Traffic may be life-changing for a minute. Maybe God wants us to slow down a bit. So give yourself a break, for there's nothing you can do anyway!

Most people use drugs or medications to alleviate stress. Though this could ease the stress for a while, it does not help the person adapt with life's stressors. It is not a great way to increase one's tolerance against stress. Hence, an individual should learn to practice effective ways to manage stress than rely on these stress drugs.
First, identify what causes you to be stressed. What can be stressful for one can be something easy to others. It could be your work, family problems, financial woes, and other anxiety-inducing events or things. Once you know the "what" and "why" of being stressed, come up with ways you can alleviate it. Here are few hints to manage stress and avoid the harmful health disorders that go with it.
One way is to breath deeply. Breathing techniques aid you to relax and also increase the body's level of oxygen, which you badly need in times of stressful conditions. Often, stressful conditions result from not planning your activities. Avoid stressful situations by scheduling things out. Last, don't resort to the ingestion of any drugs or illegal substance. They could temporarily give you relief but they do more harm to your body than stress can. You cannot escape stress by taking in drugs to keep you awake or alert because eventually, these would just make things worse.

One way to adapt with stress is by understanding your own personal stress level. There are two main categories of people: the "racehorses" who thrives on pressure and are only happy in living in the fast lane. Then, there are the "turtles" who, in order to be happy, require a more paced, tranquil environment- something that would bore or frustrate most "racehorse" types.
If you force the "racehorse" not to move, give him all the leisure, all the food he wants, all the luxury, but then, after a while, he can't run anymore because of the excess energy not eventually consumed. "Racehorses" need to be always on the move because it's built into their systems. As such, they need an outlet for talents and energies. On the other hand, when you try to teach a "turtle" to run as fast as a racehorse, you would kill it. Most of us are trying to be "racehorses". We race through our life as if life is a race to finish first.
By knowing and understanding your own personal stress level, you'll have a more easy way of adapting to stress. Since we can choose our work and career, try to opt for the one that matches your stress level. You will feel a sense of success and significance when you consider these facts of life.

Stress is certainly a lurking killer in every office and workplace. Though it is natural in our everyday lives, too much of it causes you different illnesses. You can acquire acute heart problems, respiratory difficulty, and even cancer once stress consumes your health. Health experts say that stress can dramatically lower immunity level. Hence, you need to learn how to effectively adapt or else you'll end up with an oxygen mask.
One essential of stress management is to react proactively to stress by not immersing yourself to too much work. Even though we cannot control our workloads, we can still choose not to do a portion of our work when we feel that we are extremely exhausted and drained. Don't push yourself doing things. Inasmuch as we want to accomplish as many tasks as possible, if your body is already weak due to stress, pushing yourself would just put you on the edge of breaking down.
Learn how to say NO to your boss or superiors when you feel you have enough of the workload. You can do these other tasks after you have taken some rest or sleep. You can also use body language to tell to your superior that you are stressed out. Sighing, humor loss, and irritability can be enough to convey the message. Indeed, you need to bear in mind that you can control and manage stress. It should be your choice. Don't feel trapped cause you can do a lot to manage stress.

Stress is a natural thing in life. We can experience it anywhere and anytime. However, the workplace is one environment in which stress level is high. Deadlines, increased workloads, malfunctioning computers, office equipment, and workplace conflicts are some of the office tasks that bring a lot of stress. Too much stress can cause bad physical health and low work performance. I know a friend who incurred heart rate problems because of the intolerable amount of stress in his job. Indeed, we need to look for simple ways in which we can manage our stress before our body succumbs to it.
One method to reduce your stress is through imagery. This refers to the utilization of mind and imagination to relax your body in times of heavy stress. Experts believe that this is one potent strategy which can dramatically inhibit the debilitating effects of stress to our body.
With imagery, you replace actual experience with scenes from your imagination. Your body reacts to these mental scenes almost as if they are real, soothing you down and letting adrenaline diffuse. To rest and relax with mental visualization, think of a warm, relaxing and pleasing place, and delight in it with your imagination. You will then suddenly feel relaxed and sense that the level of anxiety in your body is reduced.

Bad stress can bring a lot of harm to our body. Emotionally and psychologically, it makes us mentally drained and irritable. Physiologically, stress can cause ailments like heart problems and even dreadful cancer diseases. It even affects our efficiency and work output. Research also reveals that stress can affects one's interpersonal actions. Stress can even make a person debilitated, if not given due care and treatment. Since it is inevitable in the workplace, it is a must that every individuals should be equipped with knowledge about the nature of stress and how to counteract its ill-effects.
Thanks to this very informational and valuable book entitled "60 Second Stress Management: The Quickest Way to Relax and Ease Stress", I learned how to effectively deal with stress. Home offices are deemed to be unstressful unlike a regular office where mountains of paper can really materialize before your eyes. There is the opportunity to break away from office politics and the power to manage your own schedule. But despite these advantages, working at home can still cause stress and anxiety because of competing obligations- your family and your work- present at home. This makes keeping your office stress-free an imperative.
Here are a few suggestions for redecorating your home office. Declutter office space or workstation. Not only are clutters unsightly, they also cause stress by making you feel unprepared and disorganized. Choose calming or reviving colors like green and turquoise for accents in your office like a painting or flowy curtains. Playing classical music is also a proven stress buster. Place and burn aromatic oils or incense on the corners of your office to reduce stress significantly. Let as much natural light in as possible; this is calming compared to artificial light. Natural elements like a table fountain or potted plant are found to minimize stress. it is also important to set office boundaries. This will signal family members not to disturb you with household concerns when you are within the office's confines. Lastly, taking breaks during the day are vital to revive your sense of well-being and relax your mind. Work is good but too much of it can cause undue stress.

We often find ourselves in a doldrum when stress eats all our energy. This leads to unproductive work and inefficiency. Experts commonly link lack of time management to stress. After all, we are only humans and we are not superheroes who can do laborious tasks all at once. We need to schedule time to reduce hassles in our work, not only when it comes to time hassles, but also to stress.
Scheduling is the process by which you identify the time available to you, and plan how you use it to achieve the goals you have set. By scheduling, you prevent yourself to be overwhelmed with the activities ahead of you and you gain a feeling of control over situations, thus increasing your efficiency and productivity. Scheduling makes you manage your time properly by doing the right task at the right time and in the right way.
The task of scheduling is often associated with time management, but I truly agree that it can also be related to stress management. By scheduling things out, you are minimizing stress by avoiding over-commitment to a certain task. It increases your concentration in accomplishing an important task and helps you to preserve contingency time, one that you can later use to handle the unexpected. You can make yourself flexible, reducing the tendency of being mentally drained by your job. I, for one, can squeeze in some more time to go to the nearest workout gym or pursue other stress-free leisures just by scheduling. How's that for a stress-free tip?

The workplace is such an important avenue where people generate income. But at times working in the office is not just all about earning money. Coping up with various work and workplace-related problems may not really be that smooth-sailing at all. It was not really easy at first, but in the long run I was able to prove my worth in the office or workplace and made me what I am now. You see, I need not jump from one workplace to another searching for better job opportunities. My well-kept secret? Well, it is very simple, "never dare please everybody in the workplace."
Thanks to a postgraduate course about inter-group and inter-personal organizational skills, I was able to work my way to the top. This course provided me with all the needed competencies that are called for in the office or workplace. The course also taught me the basic and essential ways on how to plan, organize, evaluate, and communicate personnel in an organization. This effective course taught me the arts that I must develop in order to succeed and achieve a meaningful career. Now, I am pretty much happy being the boss of my own company.

Psychological stress is the leading cause of many early onsets of serious ailments among the population of the industrialized nations such as the United States. This stress may come from work, family life, and social pressures. The high standard of economic living in the industrialized countries pushes people to achieve and perform as efficient as possible. Some people are reduced as social robots striving to succeed. Failures are seen as signs of weakness or unfitness to be part of a fast-paced society that demands accomplishments.
Some studies suggested that stress also lead to some dreaded cancer diseases. For instance, the high incidence of lung cancer among the urban workers can be partially explained by the stress cooping mechanisms of some people to resort to smoking cigarettes whenever they become stressed-out. Thus, smoking becomes a habit.
One way of constructive stress management is meditation and yoga. A simple meditation technique that you can practice even at work is depth-breathing while you focus on certain relaxing mental images such as an ocean or a rainforest. The ideal time to meditate is when there are few distractions around you. Meditation can be done even in the span of a few minutes. Prayer is also a good form of meditation. The feeling of being connected to a higher being relieves stress.

Weight is one major cause of many health complications such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus disease, and cancer ailments. Excessive weight can be caused by many factors. One factor that causes excessive weight is genetics. Some people are genetically predisposed to become obese.
They have more adipose or fat cells than normal individuals. These people also have slower metabolism that they are incapable of burning as much calories as they take. These calories are then stored as fats. Horizontally-challenged people often become over-stressed workers because of their physical condition. Stress at work may lead to hypertension and heart ailments, especially in obese workers.
If you are a person with weight issues, one way of reducing stress at work is taking periodic breaks. These breaks do not need to take long. A few minutes of stretching and breathing exercise will significantly help. Workers should avoid drinking carbonated and caffeinated beverages such as tea, coffee, or soft drinks. These beverages will only cause constriction of your vascular system. Workers should also regularly drink plenty of water. Drinking at least eight glasses of water is recommended during the course of the day.

Stress usually has negative connotations and is commonly associated with words like conflict, pressure, irritability, and a lot more. Stress can cause not merely mental anxieties to people; some even get sick just because they are stressed out a lot. How would you know if you are stressed out? Are there signs that can tell that a person is already burnt out?
Stress, although a natural part of life, may have results that are alarming especially when the stress is excessive. Stress can cause quite a number of ailments because of the inability of your body to adapt to overwhelming pressure at work or at home. Some of these ailments are high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, ulcer, migraine, etc. But before these diseases even occur, it’s important to observe the signs that might tell that you are already stressed out so you can manage stress before it’s too late.
A person who has sleeping problems or has difficulty catching a sleep may be in deep stress. Likewise, a person who gets irritated easily has mood swings or cries easily may be stressed out. Other signs are an increased dependence on drugs or alcohol, someone who has poor work performance, depression, disorientation, fear of crowds or being alone, headaches or stomach problems. You can take control of stress once you have determined its signs. At the end of the day, managing stress does not only benefit your body and mind but also your relations with your family and friends.

Scientific studies had shown that people in highly industrialized countries such as the United States tend to suffer more from diabetes mellitus disease and obesity-related problems than other countries. The high incidence of diabetes mellitus and obesity in highly industrialized countries are directly correlated to nutrition and lifestyle. The sedentary lifestyle and stress are the main factors for these health problems. The lack of exercise can lead to the weakening of the cardiovascular system. This situation is exacerbated by the presence of fast food restaurants that offer high-calorie and high-fat food.
Office workers are the main victims of these health problems. The sedentary and comfortable environment of the office is one main reason for the high incidence of obesity among the office workers. On the other hand, the psychological stress related to work triggers voracious food appetite for most office workers. Over-eating becomes one coping mechanism for over-stressed workers.
Ironically, some corporate establishments tolerate the presence of fast food in their cafeteria. There should be a law enacted to discourage this practice. On the other hand, meal break time is also a good opportunity for team building that can reduce stress. Offices should implement policies that would encourage teambuilding during office breaks.

Stress can trigger various illnesses, from diabetes mellitus to the dreaded cancer diseases. Stress produces body toxins such as uric acid and prostaglandin that affect the metabolic functions of cells. Psychological stress is more destructive than physical stress. Psychological stress may trigger hormonal imbalance that may lead to certain metabolic malfunctions. Psychological stress is caused by the voluminous work loads and by the pressure to finish these work loads. Working conditions such as night shifts may also significantly contribute to the worsening of stress. Workers who work on night shifts tend to be less healthy because of the abnormal biological rhythm.
Stress cannot totally be avoided at work. However, stress can be minimized. The first important factor of reducing stress is the positive attitude of the worker. No matter how voluminous the work load is, stress is minimal if the worker likes doing the job. On the other hand, even small workload can still be stressful if the worker hates doing that particular job. Repetitive or mechanical jobs can also be very stressful. Another factor that can reduce stress is creative autonomy at work.

Stress at work is one of the leading causes of health problems such as cardiovascular diseases and onset of diabetes mellitus disease. Some research also showed that overstress produces certain toxins in the body which could trigger cancer disease. Proper exercise and relaxation may counteract work-related stress. A simple stretching or calisthenics during office breaks may prove to be helpful. Simple exercises encourage proper blood flow and cardiovascular functions. Exercise also provides the impetus for the brain to produce normal level of serotonin, which is responsible for alertness and rational thinking process.
Stress at work may also be reduced by providing employees with ergonomic devices that can maximize their performance output without sacrificing their comfort. There are ergonomic chairs that follow the body contour, providing right and comfortable posture. There are also ergonomic keypads that allow efficient typing. Ergonomic computer monitors, on the other hand, provide comfortable viewing. Ergonomic monitors usually have lesser glare and clearer image resolutions. However, the most important factor of reducing stress is the working condition itself. Flexibility and autonomy at work reduce stress. Positive and friendly atmosphere also reduces stress.

Experiencing stress can really cause bad mood swings and a negative outlook in life. That's why it's best that you know how to manage your stress. But, sometimes it's really hard to ditch the stressful emotions and feelings that we get. There are instances wherein you really cannot handle the pressure and the situation. So, what should you do?
Well, there's another way to approach stress and manage it. Stress can also be constructive and helpful for your productivity. When you feel stressed out, you take on a problem or a situation impulsively. Many times, this is a good thing because you are able to act and respond on your problematic situation. You may not know it, but stress adds spice in our lives, even if you don't want to admit it. Also, stress generates excitement and spontaneity in our everyday lives. Approaching stress with a positive outlook will allow the sun to shine through your daily lives.
Another good thing about stress is that you can turn it into a personal motivation. Stress would drive you into fresh, new ideas everyday. Just imagine life without stress. Can you see yourselves in the Stepford Wives' households? I thought so. So, a good suggestion for a fresh stress management idea, look at the bright side of stress. You'll have a healthy positive life when you turn stress into a good thing.

I get stressed-out many times when I'm under pressure or when there are so many things to be done. I don't know how to squeeze in relaxation as a stress management. It takes me a couple of minutes or even hours to calm my nerves. Sometimes, even managing my stress is stressful enough! I don't know how to balance my prepping-up time and the actual time that I start my streneous day. So, is there a fast way to relieve myself of stress? Well, there is and it takes a flash to do it.
The relaxation response for stress is simple. All you have to do is sit comfortably. You have to do this with your tired eyes closed to block out outside disturbances. Then, you manage your breathing. As you sit down, you inhale and exhale methodically. It's best that you say a word, a phrase, or a prayer during your breathing exercise. When you feel like your mind is wandering, which is inevitable, you must try to focus back on your breathing. You do this in less than 20 minutes everyday. If you can't do it everyday, it's suggested that you practice this 3-4 times a week. It's just like stretching before workout. That way, you would get used to a relaxing stress management technique, in a flash.

Stress is really uncomfortable and unnerving. You can never tell what its effects on your body are. Whether it's that stomach pain or that head ache, stress can really give off physical effects when you don't know how to deal with it properly. An effective way to relieve yourself from stress is to have techniques.
Now, what are the things that can help you deal with stress? Not all people have the same relaxation methods. So, what you can do is to first know what relaxes you. I, on one hand, like listening to music. Listening to music is a highly-relaxing activity. It wards off those unwanted anxiety attacks and worries. You can never go wrong with music; it really does sooth one's soul. You can also try "imagery". Now, what is imagery? This is a good way to have mental-stress reduction. Basically, you look at things around you that are most relaxing to your tired eyes. Say, the trees outside or the peaceful painting in your office. Imagery is very much effective when partnered with " deep breathing" and even simple stretching exercises. This will relax you mentally and physically.
Another good technique for stress relief is meditation. Meditation allows you to have inner peace and concentration. Meditation is one of the most effective ways to relax your body. You will also feel a sudden surge of recuperation and a new found energy. Having said all these, I hope you choose one that would help you relieve yourself from everyday stress.
